Meet Sam
I’m a photographer, videographer, and writer from the brave little state of Vermont, where the people, cows, and rugged mountains have carved an adventurous spirit into my soul.
The definition of journalism, in my mind, has broadened over the years to include not just newspapers, but also multimedia publications. While many journalists start their careers writing stories on paper, I went in reverse: picking up a camera long before a pen.
My love for photography began at just nine years old during a family trip to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, to watch a total solar eclipse. With nothing but a simple camera and a bit of ingenuity, I figured out how to capture the perfect shot. It was a moment of trial, error, and success that sparked my passion for visual storytelling — and it was the beginning of a journey that would blend all three forms of journalism.
Over time, my passion expanded to videography, and during the COVID pandemic, I created a five-minute PSA highlighting a hidden natural area near my town. The project was a success and led me to write for my school news site, The Hive. Since then, I’ve taken the role as Sports Correspondent for The Essex Reporter, and contributed to the Boothbay Register in Maine.
I’ve gained valuable experience and knowledge through an internship with photojournalist Caleb Kenna. He and photographers like Benjamin Williamson are some of my strongest inspiration.
From achieving the impossible of capturing the solar eclipse on a cheap camera, to covering controversial topics for multiple news outlets, my experiences have reminded me that the true impact of journalism is only recognized when you leave your comfort zone to capture the most authentic story of a place and its people. Journalism is not just about the daily headlines; it's about uncovering the hidden gems of a small town, sharing its unique story with the world, and forging meaningful connections with new people. Through writing, photography, and making films, I can share my voice while also providing others with a platform to express theirs. That is the heart of journalism.
Sincerely,
Sam
